Research on CBD’s Effects on Trouble Sleeping
Sleep is a very important function of the nervous system. It contributes to the balance of the brain and body, maintains energy levels, cognitive abilities, and plays a key role in the proper functioning of organs. Dysfunctional sleep can cause neurological disorders and is a part of almost all psychiatric problems.
A study published in 2020 investigated insomnia and its relationship with endocannabinoids, cannabinoids, including CBD and the results were incredibly promising in showing how CBD can be used as a treatment for sleep disorders.
What is Insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that makes it difficult to fall or stay asleep. It can be short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic). It may appear and disappear on its own, only to return later.
Acute insomnia lasts from one night to a few weeks.
Chronic insomnia is diagnosed when sleep-related problems persist for at least 3 months, occurring on at least 3 nights a week.
Consequences of Sleep Disorders
Although insomnia may seem minor, it can drastically affect the quality of life, overall well-being, and work performance. It can also have serious implications for physical and mental health, contributing to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression, and anxiety.
Causes of Insomnia
If someone has trouble sleeping, cannot fall asleep, or frequently wakes up, several factors can cause these sleep problems.
- Mental disorders, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) depression.
- Use of certain medications that can disrupt the sleep cycle
- Physical factors, such as restless leg syndrome (RLS)
- Caffeine (coffee, black tea), especially when consumed before bedtime
- Environmental factors – noise, uncomfortable bed
Insomnia during Pregnancy
Unfortunately, insomnia during pregnancy is considered a common problem, mainly caused by physiological and hormonal changes and often occurring during the last trimester. Those who experience insomnia may have difficulty falling asleep, poor sleep quality, and significant fatigue during wakefulness.
During pregnancy, there are factors that interrupt sleep, including:
- Increased heart activity – the uterus needs to provide enough blood and nutrition to the fetus, so the mother’s heart has to pump more blood, which can cause rapid heartbeat and wake you up at night.
- Digestive problems – digestive issues can occur during pregnancy, such as heartburn, constipation, bloating, and feeling of fullness, which can lead to waking up frequently and incomplete sleep.
- Stress – During pregnancy stress levels are drastically increased which will cause you to not fall asleep as quickly and keep you up during the night.
The Functioning of the Endocannabinoid System during Sleep
Researchers have found that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in maintaining certain body functions, such as mood, appetite, sleep, and regulating daily rhythms. The endocannabinoid system includes a network of cannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system. CB1 and CB2 are the two primary identified receptors so far.
CBD for Insomnia: Research Studies
Currently, numerous studies similar to the ones mentioned above are being conducted worldwide regarding CBD oil, examining it’s positive effects on sleep.
