What is Eczema?
Eczema is a skin condition where certain areas of the skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough. It can also cause blisters in some cases. Many people use the term “eczema” to refer to atopic dermatitis, which is the most common type.
“Atopic” refers to conditions that affect the immune system, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, and hay fever. The word “dermatitis” means inflammation of the skin.
Types of Eczema
There are seven different types of eczema:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Contact dermatitis
- Neurodermatitis
- Dyshidrotic eczema
- Nummular (discoid) eczema
- Seborrheic eczema
- Stasis dermatitis (venous eczema)
In most cases, the symptoms of eczema are mild. The common symptoms of atopic dermatitis include:
- Dry, flaky skin
- Redness
- Itching
- Open, rough, or oozing sores
Tiny blisters can appear on the palms, hands, and soles of the feet. Eczema can also occur on the face, and the scalp is also a common site for eczema. People with severe eczema may need more intensive treatment to relieve symptoms. Continuous rubbing and scratching can lead to skin infections.
Causes and Treatment Options for Eczema
Researchers do not currently know the exact causes of eczema, but many experts believe it develops from a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
Possible environmental factors include:
- Irritants: soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants, fresh fruits, and meats.
- Allergens: dust mites, pets, pollens, and mold.
- Microbes: bacteria, viruses, and certain fungi.
- Temperature: very hot or cold weather, high or low humidity, and sweating from physical activity.
- Foods: dairy products, eggs, nuts and seeds, soy products, and wheat.
- Stress: while not a direct cause of eczema, it can worsen symptoms.
- Hormones: women may experience increased eczema symptoms when their hormone levels change, such as during pregnancy and certain stages of the menstrual cycle.
Common treatment methods for eczema include:
- Oral and topical steroids
- Antihistamines
- Avoiding triggers
- Using eczema creams
- CBD Oil
Can CBD Oil be Used for Eczema?
There have been several scientific studies recently investigating the potential use of CBD oil for eczema. A study published in 2019 in the journal Clinical Therapeutics (source) reported on the examination of individuals with atopic dermatitis to determine if CBD could have any impact on reducing skin itching and related sleep disturbances.
CBD Cream for Eczema: What Do the Studies Say?
In a 2020 study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (source), participants with eczema used CBD cream and shared their experiences. Almost all of the participants reported positive findings.
Currently, numerous similar studies are being conducted to explore the possible effects of CBD oil. However, further research is needed for the scientific community to reach clear conclusions.
Therefore, it is important not to draw any conclusions based solely on these studies.
