What Causes a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted or reduced due to a blockage or bleeding in the blood vessels. This results in the brain not receiving enough oxygen, leading to the death of brain cells.
There are three main types of stroke:
- Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): It occurs when the blood flow to a part of the brain is temporarily insufficient. Normal blood flow is restored after a short time, and the symptoms resolve without treatment.
- Ischemic Stroke: It involves a blockage caused by a blood clot or plaque in an artery. Its symptoms and complications can last longer than those of a TIA and may even become permanent.
- Hemorrhagic Stroke: It is caused by a burst or leaking blood vessel.
Signs and Symptoms of Stroke
Since different areas of the brain control different parts of the body, the symptoms of a stroke depend on the affected area and the extent of damage. The signs and symptoms of a stroke can vary from person to person, but they typically occur suddenly:
- Sudden weakness or numbness on one side of the face or in one arm or leg.
- Loss of vision, coordination, sensation, or speech, or difficulty understanding speech. These symptoms can worsen over time.
- Sudden blurred vision, especially in one eye.
- Sudden loss of balance, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, nausea, fever, hiccups, or difficulty swallowing.
- Sudden and severe headache followed by fainting.
- Brief loss of consciousness.
- Dizziness or sudden falls.
If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention as stroke is a medical emergency.
Treating Stroke
Since ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes affect the body differently, they require different treatments. Prompt diagnosis is important to reduce brain damage and allow the doctor to treat the stroke using the appropriate method.
Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke can have long-lasting physical and emotional effects, often requiring specialized therapies and support systems for successful recovery. These may include:
- Speech therapy to address speech production or comprehension problems.
- Physical therapy to help patients regain movement and coordination.
- Occupational therapy to improve daily activities such as bathing, cooking, dressing, eating, reading, and writing.
- Support groups that assist patients in coping with common mental health issues, such as depression, after a stroke.
- Support from friends and family that provides comfort and practical assistance following a stroke.
Can CBD Oil be Used for Stroke Aftercare?
Recent clinical research has been conducted on the potential application of CBD oil for stroke aftercare. For example, a study titled “Therapeutic Potential of Non-Psychotropic Cannabidiol in Ischemic Stroke“ was published in 2010.
Currently, numerous studies similar to the aforementioned are being conducted worldwide to examine the effects of CBD and CBD oil.
CBD Oil for Stroke: Research and Facts
A 2010 study aimed to determine if CBD could help protect stroke survivors from brain damage. Another scientific article published in 2017 investigated whether CBD could influence cerebral blood flow.
As these studies continue to come out the results seem to be more promising everytime in regards to using CBD oil for strokes.
