After becoming popular in Asian cuisine, ginger also became a staple in European cooking. This article looks at how it’s used and what research says.
The Origin of Ginger
Common ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant native to Southeast Asia. Its root is widely used as a spice and a medicinal herb. Ginger is closely related to turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. The word zingiber comes from the Greek zingiberis, which was derived from the Sanskrit singabera. Ginger has been used in India and China since ancient times, and by the 1st century AD, traders were already bringing it to the Mediterranean region.
The Ginger Root and Ginger Flower
The ginger plant’s leafy stems grow to about 1 meter tall, with leaves that are 15–30 cm long. The flowers form dense, cone-shaped spikes about 2.5 cm thick and 5–8 cm long, each cluster containing tiny yellow-green and purple flowers. Ginger is propagated by planting root cuttings, and during harvest, the rhizomes (rootstocks) are dug up, cleaned, and sun-dried. The dried ginger root has an irregular shape, with colors varying from dark yellow through light brown to pale brown.
Consuming Ginger
Beyond its beneficial effects, ginger stands out as a fantastic spice and flavor enhancer. It can brighten up numerous dishes, including vegetables, sweets, beverages, and pickles. Adding it to boiling water makes a flavorful tea, which can be sweetened with honey. Many believe ginger tea or honey-ginger remedies help ease cold symptoms, while others swear by fresh grated ginger when dealing with a runny nose. Raw ginger should be peeled before consumption.
The recommended amount of ground ginger is one-third of the amount of fresh ginger, although fresh and dried ginger differ somewhat in flavor. Powdered dry ginger root is typically used in gingerbread or other baked goods and cookies.
Side Effects of Ginger
Ginger’s side effects are usually mild, including heartburn and diarrhea, but overdose can cause general stomach discomfort. Taking more than 5 grams daily increases the risk of side effects.
Women close to giving birth or those who have previously experienced miscarriages should avoid ginger. It is also contraindicated for individuals with blood clotting disorders.
