What are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are natural compounds found in the cannabis plant. There are over 480 different substances in the plant, and around 140 of them are called cannabinoid compounds.

The most well-known cannabinoid is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), which is the main psychoactive component in certain cannabis plant varieties.

Another important component is cannabidiol (CBD), which makes up about 5-8% of the resin extract from the plant, but it does not have psychoactive effects.

Cannabinoid Receptors

Research on cannabinoids has led to the discovery of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a biological system in mammals. It consists of endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. The ECS regulates various functions in the body, including appetite, memory, mood, pain sensation, reproduction, and sleep.

In the human body, there are cannabinoid receptors that can interact with the active compounds in the cannabis plant.

  • CB1 receptors are typically found in the central nervous system
  • CB2 receptors are primarily located in the immune system, digestive system, and reproductive system.

Cannabinoid receptors act as sensors on the surface of cells. They gather information about the external environment and initiate the appropriate cellular response based on external conditions and influences.

For more information about the endocannabinoid system, visit Endocannabinoid System.

Plant Cannabinoids

Plant cannabinoids, also known as phytocannabinoids, are found in large quantities in the resin produced by glandular structures called trichomes on the cannabis plant. This substance is also rich in terpenes, which are responsible for the distinctive aroma of the cannabis plant.

Some of the discovered and well-known types of cannabinoids are:

  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabidivarin (CBDV)

All of these cannabinoids form the full spectrum of cannabinoids when taken together and they create a phenomenon called “the entourage effect”

Some Lesser-Known Phytocannabinoids

  • Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) converts to CBD through decarboxylation (heating). If someone consumes raw cannabis plant, they intake CBDA instead of CBD.
  • Cannabinol (CBN) is the degraded form of THC, usually found in older cannabis plants, and its sedative effects are primarily praised, although studies have not yet shown such results in humans.
  • Cannabigerol (CBG) is the decarboxylated form of CBGA. CBG weakly binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors, and its potential is currently being investigated.

Cannabinoid Oil, Powder, Cream – CBD Products

CBD products are available in various forms. The most popular one is CBD oil. The dosage of CBD oil should always be followed based on the guidance provided on the product.

CBD creams are applied topically for specific skin issues, directly on the affected area, but there is no proven positive or negative effect of this.
