CARNITINE COMPLEX tablets – for regular exercise and as a supplement to a healthy diet!

L-carnitine is made from lysine and methionine and supports normal energy production and fat metabolism. About 95% of the body’s carnitine is stored in muscle tissue. is stored in the heart and skeletal muscles, with most of the remainder found in the liver and kidneys. (Only about 0.5% circulates in the plasma, and any excess plasma carnitine is excreted through urine.)

Vitamin C helps the body make carnitine. Some people — including athletes, active adults, and those who follow vegetarian or vegan diets — may choose to supplement based on their overall intake.

How does L-carnitine work?

Research on L-carnitine describes carnitine’s role in energy production, including helping move long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria where ATP is made. It also helps clear certain compounds from the mitochondria.

There are three main forms of carnitine:

  • Acetyl-L-carnitine is a common ingredient in many supplement formulas.
  • Contains L-carnitine L-tartrate, a form commonly used in sports nutrition.
  • Propionyl-L-carnitine may help support healthy circulation.

Carnitine deficiency is generally classified as primary or secondary. Primary carnitine deficiency is a medical condition involving carnitine transport. Carnitine plays a role in normal energy metabolism. If you have a medical condition or take prescription medication, ask a healthcare professional before use.

Secondary carnitine deficiency Low carnitine levels can occur in some medical situations, including chronic kidney failure, when the body makes less carnitine or loses more of it. They can also occur with medications that contain pivalate, and checking carnitine levels may be part of care.

L-carnitine and weight support

L-carnitine supports the transport of fatty acids into cells, where the body can use them for energy. It’s often sold as a dietary supplement for general wellness, and research on its effects is still limited. Here are a few research notes:

  • One randomized clinical trial looked at adults ages 47-59 in a clinical setting who used L-carnitine alongside a prescription medication. This is research context only and is not a promise of product results.
  • A 2016 Read reviews of nine randomized clinical trials examined carnitine and body-weight outcomes. Results varied across studies, and researchers reported a modest average difference of 1.33 kg between the carnitine and placebo groups.
  • A 2020 meta-analysis of 37 studies reviewed L-carnitine supplementation and body composition measures such as body weight, BMI, and fat mass.

L-carnitine is often taken alongside healthy eating and regular exercise as part of a broader weight-management plan.

L-Carnitine for Metabolism Support

Healthy metabolic function is linked to mitochondrial activity and muscle fatty acid oxidation. L-carnitine has been studied for its potential to support normal glucose metabolism and cellular energy production, but research is still limited.

  • A 2017 meta-analysis of 631 adults with insulin resistance found that 2 or 3 g of L-carnitine daily for 1 to 12 months was associated with improvements in some metabolic markers, with larger effects seen after 12 months than after 3 months.
  • A 2023 research review suggested that L-carnitine may support healthy metabolic function. Research is still limited, and results may vary.

L-carnitine: what research suggests

Carnitine may help support normal energy metabolism. Research on its role in this process is still ongoing. conditionally essential nutrient L-carnitine has been studied for its possible role in brain health and cellular energy, but research on age-related cognitive health is still limited.

  • In a 2018 study, researchers evaluated 1,500 mg of ALCAR (acetyl-L-carnitine) daily for 28 weeks and measured several study outcomes.
  • A meta-analysis reviewed acetyl-L-carnitine in cognitive research, but the findings are limited and mixed.
  • Some people use L-carnitine for 4–6 months at a time, but research on cognitive benefits is still limited.

L-carnitine and cardiovascular wellness

Carnitine helps transport fatty acids into cells L-carnitine supports the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are used for energy production. Researchers have also studied its possible role in supporting healthy oxidative balance. Research is still ongoing.

  • Some research has looked at L-carnitine in heart-health settings, but the evidence is mixed and not strong enough to support a marketing claim.
  • Research on L-carnitine is mixed.
  • A 2017 review suggested that L-carnitine may support normal heart function, though research is still limited.
  • Some research has explored L-carnitine and cardiovascular health markers, but the evidence remains mixed and not conclusive.

If you have a heart condition, circulation problems, or take prescription medication, ask a healthcare professional before using L-carnitine.

L-Carnitine for Active Lifestyles

For athletes with demanding training schedules, a balanced diet and targeted supplementation can help support energy metabolism. Carnitine has been studied for its possible role in exercise performance and recovery.

Early research has looked at L-carnitine:

A 2021 Research Review found that L-carnitine may support:

  • Muscle recovery after exercise
  • possible effects on energy metabolism during exercise; and
  • may support exercise performance and endurance.

In another review of three studies, researchers found mixed results. Research on propionyl-L-carnitine suggests it may support exercise tolerance and comfort, though findings have been mixed.

A 2018 research review and looked at 251 athletes and recreational exercisers ages 16-50 using 1-4 grams of L-carnitine daily for up to 6 months; the research explored possible effects on exercise performance and recovery, but results were mixed.

L-carnitine is often paired with vitamin C in supplements.

Vitamin C helps the body make carnitine. If you’re considering L-carnitine and vitamin C together, choose supplements that fit your routine and ask a healthcare professional if you have questions. Liposome Vitamin C.
