It does not certify a product or replace the rules of an athlete&#8217;s anti-doping organization.<\/p>\n<h2>What the Prohibited List controls<\/h2>\n<p>The Prohibited List is an international anti-doping standard. It identifies substances and methods prohibited at all times, only in competition, or only in particular sports. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-09\/2026list_en_final_clean_september_2025.pdf\">official 2026 Prohibited List<\/a> took effect on January 1, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The examples in the list are not always exhaustive. Athletes and support personnel should use the current official list and the rules of the organization that governs their competition.<\/p>\n<h2>How WADA changes the list<\/h2>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/files\/2021_wada_code.pdf\">World Anti-Doping Code<\/a>, WADA publishes the list at least annually and sends proposed revisions to signatories and governments for comment and consultation. Annual revisions generally take effect three months after publication, while exceptional changes can be made sooner.<\/p>\n<p>WADA may consider a substance or method for inclusion when it meets at least two of these three criteria:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It has the potential to enhance or does enhance sport performance.<\/li>\n<li>It represents an actual or potential health risk to the athlete.<\/li>\n<li>It violates the spirit of sport described in the Code.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A substance or method can also be prohibited when it can mask the use of another prohibited substance or method. WADA reviews the list with scientific, medical, and anti-doping experts.<\/p>\n<h2>What current WADA guidance says about CBD<\/h2>\n<p>As of this review, CBD itself is not prohibited. WADA places other natural and synthetic cannabinoids in section S8 as prohibited in competition. WADA also warns that CBD oils and tinctures may contain THC or other cannabinoids that could lead to a positive test.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wada-ama.org\/en\/prohibited-list\">Check the current WADA list and cannabinoid guidance<\/a>. U.S. athletes can also review the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usada.org\/spirit-of-sport\/marijuana-faq\/\">USADA cannabinoid and anti-doping FAQ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Removal from the list is not product approval<\/h2>\n<p>CBD&#8217;s status on the Prohibited List does not mean WADA has approved a CBD product, verified its contents, or confirmed that it is suitable for a particular athlete. Product labels may not identify every cannabinoid that testing can detect.<\/p>\n<h2>Keep the two questions separate<\/h2>\n<p>This page covers how the Prohibited List is made and revised.
