Dose, kidney function, medications, age and the reason for taking it all matter.

Editorially reviewed by Jake Crossman, NASM-CNC. Evidence use, claim scope, clarity, and safety language reviewed October 10, 2026.

Clinical review: Pending. NASM-CNC is a nutrition-coaching credential, not a medical license.

The short answer

No dietary supplement is right for everyone. Magnesium glycinate contains magnesium bound to glycine. The “glycinate” form does not remove the need to check the amount of elemental magnesium on the label, consider all other sources of magnesium, and review health conditions and medicines.

Most magnesium in a healthy diet comes from foods. Supplements can help some people meet an identified need, but they should not be used to diagnose or self-treat symptoms that may have another cause.

How much magnesium do adults need?

The recommended daily amount of magnesium from all sources varies by age and sex. For adults, the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists 310–320 mg per day for women and 400–420 mg per day for men, with separate values for pregnancy and breastfeeding.

That total-intake recommendation is different from the upper limit for magnesium from supplements and medications. For adults, the upper limit from those sources is 350 mg per day unless a clinician directs otherwise. The limit does not include magnesium naturally present in food.

Who should get medical guidance first?

Ask a clinician or pharmacist before taking magnesium if you have kidney disease, take regular prescription medicine, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are choosing a dose for a child. Healthy kidneys remove excess magnesium, so impaired kidney function can increase the risk of excessive levels.

Magnesium can also affect how some medicines are absorbed. The NIH notes interactions with certain antibiotics and medicines used for osteoporosis. Diuretics and long-term proton-pump inhibitor use can also affect magnesium status. A pharmacist can help separate doses or determine whether monitoring is appropriate.

Possible side effects and warning signs

High supplemental intakes can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping. Very high amounts can be dangerous and may lead to low blood pressure, breathing difficulty, irregular heartbeat or cardiac arrest. Severe symptoms require urgent medical care.

More is not better. Follow the product label unless a clinician provides a different plan, and include magnesium from antacids or laxatives when reviewing total intake.

What magnesium glycinate can, and cannot, tell you

A supplement label can tell you the serving size and elemental-magnesium amount. It cannot tell you whether fatigue, cramps, numbness, sleep problems or another symptom is caused by low magnesium. Those symptoms have many possible causes. A healthcare professional may use medical history and testing when deficiency is suspected.

Evidence about magnesium and specific conditions is mixed. Population studies can show associations, but they do not prove that a magnesium glycinate supplement prevents or treats diabetes, osteoporosis, anxiety, high blood pressure or insomnia. This page therefore does not promise those outcomes.

A practical safety checklist

Check the elemental-magnesium amount, not only the compound name.

Add up magnesium from supplements, antacids and laxatives.

Review kidney disease, pregnancy, age and regular medicines with a clinician or pharmacist.

Stop and seek advice if side effects are persistent or severe.

Use food sources, such as legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and leafy greens, as the foundation.

Takeaway: Magnesium glycinate may fit some routines, but it is not automatically safe for every person or every dose. Start with the label, your full medication list and individualized medical guidance when risk factors apply.

Keep learning

Read the evidence-led magnesium and sleep guide, or compare the label on USA Medical Magnesium Bisglycinate.
